The Cheap Way Out

2 large starbucks coffees and 2 crumble berry coffee cakes – $7.40 (and 700 calories a piece!)

2 hours reading around kitchen table, wrapped in multiple sweaters, scarves and long johns, squinting through the bleak mid-winter light – 0 dollars (0 calories)

2 tickets to see Children of Men, thus fueling argument over whether said movie is an indictment against British policy, American policy, or Western policy, and also watch Julianne Moore play yet another woman who loses a child – $14.00 (but many calories burned through vigorous  agitated debate)

4 beers and plate of chicken nachos with extra jalapenos – $29.00 (let’s not even talk of the calories…thousands?)

Returning home after third excursion out to discover your household is one of the 60,000 in the area with restored power from the wicked ice storm, instead of one of the 90,000 without?

Well, you know the rest.

  1. Emily says:

Glad you got your power back. We over here in the northeast wouldn’t have a clue what ice, snow, sleet (any of that stuff) is. We’re stuck in perpetual early spring(daffodil shoots coming up, lots of birds that never flew any farther south, ticks on the dog…).

  2. Stefanie says:

Ouch. I guess we have to be careful in wishing for winter weather. We only got 4 inches of snow but it’s been below zero at night and in the low teens during the day.

  3. Glad you got your power back!

  4. LK says:

Thank god for beer and nachos! Oh, yeah, and electricity.

  5. Emily Barton says:

I take that back, now that I’ve just spend the evening driving through snow and ice to get to New Hampshire (of course, winter decided to show up the day I had to make a three-and-a-half-hour drive).

  6. litlove says:

Nope, no sign of winter here. At all. Temperature still around 10 degrees celcius. The thought of a power cut through snow sounds romantic and adventurous to me (although it was probably nothing of the sort!).

  7. Carl V. says:

Remind me not to ask Julianna Moore to babysit!!! 😉

  8. Emily – LOL – I was thinking of you just the other day when I saw the NOrthest get whallopped…glad to see you got some winter.

Stefanie – I’ll still take this kind of winter over the blah mild one we were having before…I’m one of those weirdos who just loves winter!

The mutprincess – welcome and thank you!

LK – beer and nachos – my elixir of the gods, so to speak!

Litlove – it would have been more romantic if S. and i were more romantic people or, at the very least,in some way prepared for it!

Carl – it was so funny – a couple of years ago my friend A. and I were watching previews for movies and realized just how often JM plays someone who loses a child. If going to the movies has taught us anything,it’s to not trust JM with our children!
